Cugó Gran Vittoriosa

Set in the historic city of Birgu, Malta, Cugó Gran Vittoriosa is a small-scale hotel where centuries of history meet contemporary design. The hotel occupies the former Palace of the Captains of the Galleys, dating back to 1741, and reopened its doors as Cugó Gran Vittoriosa in 2026. With just eighteen suites, the experience feels personal and private, while Malta’s rich heritage remains present throughout the hotel.

Sanus per Aquam

Beneath the hotel’s historic vaulted ceilings lies Sanus per Aquam, a spa designed as a contemporary interpretation of the traditional hammam. Stone, wood, woven textures and natural tones define the interior, complemented by greenery and light-coloured furnishings.

Water plays a central role in the spa experience. Facilities include a jet pool, sauna, steam room and a variety of water experiences, alongside private treatment rooms designed for individuals and couples.

Massages, facials and holistic treatments are tailored to each guest, all within an intentionally calm setting. After exploring the streets of Birgu, the spa offers a place to unwind and recharge, while also providing space to simply slow down and focus on wellness.

Comfort in the treatment room

For its treatment rooms, Cugó Gran Vittoriosa selected three Velvet Evo W4 Pro Podo treatment beds in Continental White with a white base. Their light, understated design complements the spa’s natural colour palette.

During massages and longer treatments, the generous Cloud 9 Super Soft Mattress™ gives guests space to relax, while integrated heating adds warmth throughout the treatment. Electric adjustment allows therapists to easily adapt the bed to a comfortable working position.

The same considered approach continues throughout the treatment rooms. Three Sympatico Comfort stools support therapists during treatments, while Cloud 9 neck cushions provide additional support for guests.

At Cugó Gran Vittoriosa, the focus is on the balance between the historic building, contemporary design and personal guest experiences.

Staying between history and contemporary design

The building’s history can be seen throughout the hotel. High vaulted ceilings, original limestone walls and the generous proportions of the former palace were carefully preserved during the restoration. Contemporary materials and thoughtfully selected furniture create a calm contrast with these historic features.

Lighting also plays an important part in this approach. The lighting concept draws inspiration from the warm atmosphere of candlelight, subtly highlighting the building’s historic details and high ceilings. The result is a hotel that feels contemporary without losing the character of its original architecture.

This attention to detail continues throughout the stay. From the individually designed suites to views across the Grand Harbour, Cugó Gran Vittoriosa maintains a calm, personal atmosphere throughout.
